Automotive Half-Shafts – The “Critical Shaft” for Power Transmission

Automotive half-shafts are drive shafts that connect the differential to the wheels. Their core function is to transmit power from the engine/motor from the differential to the wheels, driving the vehicle. They are divided into solid and hollow half-shafts (hollow half-shafts are lighter and more commonly used in passenger cars; solid half-shafts are stronger and more commonly used in off-road vehicles and trucks). The two ends of the half-shaft are connected to the differential and wheel hubs via universal joints (allowing flexible power transmission during steering and suspension movements) and splines, ensuring stable power transmission.

 

The performance of the half-shaft directly affects the vehicle's power output and driving stability: if the half-shaft is deformed, broken, or the universal joint is worn, it will cause problems such as vehicle vibration during acceleration, abnormal noises during driving (more noticeable when cornering), and interruption of power transmission. In daily use, avoid high-speed driving over potholes (which can easily cause half-shaft deformation due to impact); avoid frequent aggressive starts (which increase the torque load on the half-shaft); and regularly check the half-shaft dust boots (if the dust boots are damaged, mud and sand will enter the universal joints, leading to accelerated wear). The maintenance cycle for half shafts is relatively long, but if the above-mentioned fault symptoms occur, they should be repaired or replaced in time to avoid affecting driving safety.
