The lifespan of a car half-shaft is related to time, but it's not entirely determined by time. Actual lifespan is influenced by a variety of factors.

 

Under normal operating conditions, under ideal conditions, if the vehicle is used moderately, on good road conditions, and properly maintained, the half-shaft lifespan may exceed 10 years or 100,000 kilometers. For example, regularly checking for dust covers, timely changing of lubricating oil, and avoiding overloading or aggressive driving can effectively delay half-shaft wear. The integrity of the dust cover is crucial to the half-shaft lifespan; if it's damaged, mud and sand entering the CV joint will accelerate the deterioration of the lubrication layer, leading to increased wear.

 

The impact of harsh road conditions and the environment: If a vehicle is driven for a long time in harsh road conditions (such as potholes, wading through water) or corrosive environments, the half-shaft lifespan may be significantly shortened. For example, mud and sand entering the CV joint will damage the lubrication layer, causing direct friction between metal parts and accelerating wear, potentially shortening the lifespan to about 5 years. Corrosive environments (such as salt spray and chemicals) will accelerate oxidation of the half-shaft surface, reducing its structural strength and further shortening its service life. The Significant Impact of Driving Habits: Driving habits significantly affect the lifespan of half-shafts. Rapid acceleration, sudden braking, and sharp turns increase the impact force on the half-shaft, leading to metal fatigue and accelerated wear. For example, frequent rapid acceleration causes a sudden increase in torque on the half-shaft, which may cause cracks or breakage over time; sharp turns subject the half-shaft to lateral forces, accelerating wear on the CV joint.

 

The Critical Importance of Maintenance: Regular maintenance is the core measure to extend the lifespan of half-shafts. Regularly inspect the half-shaft for external defects (cracks, deformation), check for oil seal leaks, and change the transmission system lubricant as required by the vehicle manual. Lubricant reduces friction between components and slows down wear; neglecting maintenance may lead to premature damage to the half-shaft due to lack of lubrication. Furthermore, timely replacement of damaged dust covers and oil seals prevents the entry of mud and moisture, protecting the internal structure of the half-shaft.
